Is best known for his role alongside Stephen Fry in Jeeves and Wooster.

'It's bloody marvelous' to quote Bertie Wooster.

He is a freak and also an inspiration. He hasn't wasted an ounce of his talent. And as you say gard works beats no work in the end. Even good looks can go away

In the UK, Hugh Laurie is probably best known by Gen-X for his role as "Lieutenant George" in Blackadder goes forth:

I can't say I believe in the "Hugh Laurie Effect" just because there are so many people who negate it that are successful (raised poor, not good looking, average intelligence, etc). When you're done looking at Hugh Laurie's wikipedia page, go on over to Jackie Gleason's page, known as one of the early fathers of television.

Is there such a thing as a mid-wit polymath ultracrepidarian?

If so, I may reside in that category…🤷‍♂️

It's funny that you're writing about Hugh Laurie right now because my son and I just started binging the House, MD show (which I watched in its entirety on TV back in the day). I love Hugh Laurie as an actor, and yes, he has a lot going for him... or so it seems.

I actually asked ChatGPT whether Hugh Laurie is religious, and it said "he considers himself an atheist." Now, from a Christian standpoint, this means that all his accomplishments, all his awards, all his fame amount to exactly nothing. Because unless you live your life to glorify God (i.e., you live to glorify yourself because that's the only alternative), your eternity will be nothing to write home about. As Jesus said, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?"

Not to be proselytizing, but it's worth thinking about. What if it were true? What if all the worldly fame and fortune meant nothing in the greater scheme?

The meaning is he's living his best life by doing the things he enjoys and has some ability to do. That's all any of us have. Take your ability, add your desires, your persistence and ambition. Added together it's a good life with no regrets. That is exactly the opposite of amounting to nothing.
