Best line in this post: "All the pain in my life comes from when I am resisting." That's really what it's all about. Align your will with God's will and "Do whatever he tells you," as Mary, Jesus's mother, said to the servants at the wedding at Cana. That's what will make you a Saint. :)
Great article, thanks for this. It triggered some of those dormant memories of “the universe” or whatever it was stepping in at key moments in my life as well.
For what it’s worth I count myself among the 2,250 and can’t recommend NIGHT MOVES highly enough. If you enjoy this man’s writing, do yourself a favour and pick up that book.
Jared, this is a wonderful essay. I swear, your writing is as if you have insight to my thoughts and beliefs. Both you and I have similar beliefs on GOD and spirituality. Question: have you considered the depths of Free Will? If we believe in GOD, our souls, and heaven and an afterlife, where was our soul before it was incarnate in these bodies we have? I truly believe that our soul is immortal and also I believe in reincarnation. Layer in the concept of Free Will, and consider whether our soul has free will and makes the choices of what our lives will be like. If you take that concept at its word, then many aspects of our lives were/are meant to occur. Thank you again for your excellent writing.
I will suggest that it comes down to our moral agency. We can choose to believe, to see the miracles around us, or we can choose to reject that perspective, to see everything as chance. Those who demand proof of God's existence will never accept any evidence offered by another human, no matter how striking, but that is not because the evidence is not there, but because they refuse to believe. It is their choice.
I will note that many such people do eventually have experiences that cause them to change their perspective, but I don't know of any who were convinced by the arguments of other people.
"All the pain in my life comes from when I am resisting." - this hits hard and is something I have only begun to appreciate recently. Boy oh boy is life easier when you dont resist. I heard Deepak chopra say on a podcast when asked if he could give listeners just one piece of advice, his reply was "in life you have only two choices. Flow or resist. That's it.".
Been loving your recent pieces so much that I wanted to say thank you for putting them out there. 'Resentment' hit a little too close to home and I have been thinking about it for a while and then this piece came out.
I feel like I can relate to your writing, and believe myself to be a rational person, but have also experienced events that have steered my life on this path. I was involved with a algo trading desk, and we did well for a while, but the close of that desk coincided with some political turmoil which extended to this last decade. I felt back then that it was a fait accompli, and I could read the signs that the world was going to change in a major way. A new world order so to speak. It all happened incrementally, and through a series of decisions, I ended up working in AI. The trading business wasn’t meant to happen, at least not at that time. Perhaps any other time, and the story would have ended differently, and I think about that constantly. I continued to try when many said I should have let go. I went to west coast, and in attempting to rebuild that business, made connections in the tech world. Some could say that this was based on ego, but I never saw it that way, however perceptions matter. The world changed in all the ways that were counter to what we had done previously. If I had not done what I did, and knowing that there were people who would never support my initiatives, certain paths in the future would have never been open to me. Life is a series of strange coincidences.
Another amazing post! Thank you Jared! For some reason each posts main subject is always what my life is going through at the moment, synchronicity or luck lol Constantly putting a smile on my face and getting my week started with some great words to ponder on! Cheers buddy!
A man is watching the news and is warned a flood is coming.
He says, “I don’t have to worry about that, God will protect me.”
Later the water is up to his ankles. The national guard comes to his house and tells him he needs to evacuate. He tells them “NO, God will protect me, and I wont leave.”
Later he is on the roof. The coast guard comes by and says “Get in the boat. The water is rising,.” He still says “No, God will protect me.”
He is now on his chimney and a helicopter comes and lowers a ladder.
He still refuses and is proclaiming God will save him.
He dies.
In heaven he says “why did God not provide for me.”
God answers “I gave you warning on the news, I sent the national guard the coast guard, a helicopter and you ignored all the help given.”
Im not sure what point Im trying to make to you. But I turned these 2 contrasting takes over in my head multiple times last night. Thinking how some people see the signs, some don’t, some take the opportunity, some don’t.

Great writing. And to think it was done while waiting for a car to get fixed. Crazy awesome!

I was meant to like this post
Really like this one - life is much better when lived in a viewpoint such as described here.
I have heard a similar story.

and wondering when I am each
Love your work mate 🍺
