I went to Miami two weeks ago, and stopped at the Books & Books store in the airport. It’s a pretty substantial bookstore for an airport. No Worries wasn’t there, but you know what was? Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Kiyosaki is one of the world’s great ding-dongs, and the book is still selling 30 years later, even though everyone knows it’s a ridiculous book and Kiyosaki himself almost went broke taking his own advice. But
I read your book and loved it !! Bought 2 more to gift to my nephews about to graduate from college. I’m rooting for you and hope the book makes it big because people need to hear your advice and I’d love to hear about your next shopping spree at John Vs : )
Having read the above, my take it that your would prefer being a commercial success. In your mind it seems you would then feel like a critical success. Who wants to write books no one reads? That said I am going to read your book. Your writing is unique and perhaps not for everyone. While not always in agreement, I understand and appreciate your point of view. Your line about Patterson writing books "to help people take a sh.. is too funny. It made me laugh out loud hard. That alone is a gift. Keep writing. I bet you get your hit, and appreciation. Like I said, I do not always agree with you, but you are authentic. We seem to be in a period when authenticity is not appreciated. But it is timeless.
My favorite example is Thomas Kinkade. Hisart makes me gag, but he is rich because he makes millions of people happy and markets himself well. Arrested Development was genius, I watched The Big Bang Theory on a flight years ago. It is designed to make dumb people feel better about themselves by charicaturing smart people. Total shlock.
Well said Jared. I too have seen the dichotomy between commercial success and good music, movies, etc only get wider over the years- now it's like the Grand Canyon. An artist often started with a cult following or a movie would get its legs via word of mouth. The sad fact is that the community of music and art is almost gone with only mass commercialization now. Music plug: Matt Pond, a guy who has been making stellar indie music for years with no major commercial success.
I like reading your shit. Sounds a little whiny but straight from the gut. Heading out now to find Wet Ass Pussy and Barry Hannah. Just write and maybe after you're dead the masses will flock to it.

Ok I’ll bite… what’s the best introduction to Barry Hannah?
"Testimony of Pilot" is mentioned as one of his best (I haven't read it yet - it's in the queue).
Put it at the top of the queue. The best short story ever written.

Your browsing comment made me think how important jacket art and graphics were to catch people's eye.
Which led me to think how important album art was to the music sales industry.
Trades gone the way of the horse carriage trade.
for the record, Moonlight sucked!
